Cartridge filters are a type of pool or water filter that use a replaceable, cylindrical element (the "cartridge") made from pleated fabric to trap dirt, debris, and impurities as water flows through it.
🔹 How they work:
- Water enters the filter housing.
- It passes through the pleated cartridge inside.
- The pleats catch dirt, debris, and even fine particles.
- Clean water exits the other side and goes back into the pool or system.
🔹 Key Points:
- Easy maintenance: You just remove the cartridge, hose it off, and reuse it (until it's too worn and needs replacing).
- Efficient: Good at capturing small particles.
- No backwashing needed: Unlike sand filters, you don’t have to reverse the flow of water to clean it — just manually clean the cartridge.
- Space-saving: Cartridge filters are compact and often used for smaller to medium-sized pools or spas.
🔹 When to clean/replace:
- Clean when the pressure gauge rises about 8-10 PSI above the normal level.
- Typically, replace the cartridge every 1–2 years, depending on use and care.
